Those legs, though...

Writer: Jennifer SchultzJennifer Schultz

A little peek into one of my sketchbooks.

I have several art journals but, this Moleskine is the one I usually keep nearby when I'm on the go. It's filled with random sketches, napkins, acrylic paintings, watercolors, crayons and more. And, birds. Lots of birds.

I love birds.

I discovered, over the weekend, the super cool Green Heron. The first thing that struck me was the crazy legs on this bird. The legs on the Green Heron are rather large, bright in color and much like the legs of a chicken. So, of course, I HAD to draw this little critter!

I did a bit of reading up on this bird, today, and found that they are pretty solitary and prefer solitude. I love this bird even more, now. If you're into symbolism, I also discovered that the heron is a symbol of: independence, determination, solitude, patience among several other character traits. If you'd like to learn more on this, there's an interesting read, here: http://www.whats-your-sign.com/meaning-of-the-heron.html

This was one of those moments where I felt like this little meeting was just meant to be. Considering where I am in life, this bird and this read was spot on.

Well played, Heron...well played.

As usual, I used a mixture of various media to create my new Heron friend. Who knows. I may just decide to make a painting of my new friend.
