I'm a mom, a wife, I have a full-time job, I instruct yoga and, I paint.
Is it cliché to say that painting is therapy for me? While I'm painting and creating, I'm in my own world. I'm in a space where all of my focus is on making shapes, scratches, and new colors. I don't think of where it's going or where it's going to end. I'm just there (usually with my earbuds in). I'm expressing myself, with no idea of what the end result has to look like, Because that's the beauty in art: there is no failing. There is no "doing it wrong". Your art doesn't get a pass or a fail.
I also discovered, today, an article titled, 'The Neuroaesthetics of Art and Happiness' on Neuroaesthetics (the scientific study of how the brain is affected by creating and viewing art). I'll link below* (in the event that anyone out there actually reads this blog!) It's a great and quick read. A quote in this article states, "Creating art increases the “feel good” neurotransmitter dopamine and contributes to well-being and happiness. Belkofer 1 , by mapping brain frequency effects after drawing, found that such brain functions as self-regulation, relaxation, memory and spatial-temporal and visual processing are activated when people make art."
So, there's the science to back me up when I tell people that art is therapy for me! I get lost in painting for hours and I love every minute of it.
Now, if I could just find a dedicated space in our home for the scattered piles of art supplies that I always end up with.
Here are some progress photos of the painting I'm currently working on...as you can see, I've changed my mind on the background a few times! I think I'm getting closer to being done, though...maybe.
Happy Tuesday.
